The choice of a two-wheeled vehicle is not neutral: the motorbike is an icon of speed, dynamism and adventure, a modern symbol of emancipation and movement. Cavenago preserves the structure and recognisability of the vehicle, but suspends its function. The sculpture is not a means of transport; it is a dreamt-of form, frozen in its stillness, conveying a potential that has never been realised.
The use of stainless steel, with its reflective and glossy surface, transforms the mechanical form into a visual device: the sculpture interacts with the surrounding space, reflects light and creates perceptual variations. Aluminium, light and sterile, contrasts with the density of the steel, placing the work in a state of internal tension between visual weight and formal lightness.
In CHP1, the motorbike is neither a functional ready-made nor a ‘realistic’ model: it is rather a symbolic object suspended between the presence and absence of movement. Its more articulated lines, compared with Cavenago’s other vehicles, reveal a greater complexity of form, which evokes not so much actual use as the perception of motion. The work suggests speed without ever becoming movement; it evokes agility whilst remaining motionless.
The sculpture forms part of Cavenago’s line of research, which employs recognisable forms to neutralise their technical efficacy, transforming the vehicle into a critical device. It is not a vehicle to be ridden, but one to be observed; it is not an actor within the landscape, but a presence that questions it. The vehicle thus becomes a margin, a suspended potential, which refers to categories of experience — movement, speed, freedom — without pursuing them.
In CHP1, the boundary between sculpture and machine disappears only to be reformulated: the vehicular form is not abolished, but stripped of its function, suspended in a state of virtuality. The vehicle does not move, but evokes the idea of movement in space, transforming every view into an act of active contemplation.
